ETTRICK, Va. – Shepherd University (3-6) used a 13-hit attack en route to an 18-4 win over Virginia State (5-6) in baseball action at Virginia State on Sunday.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run blast by senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC).
The Rams added nine runs in the second with a two-run single by junior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) and a three-run double by sophomore designated hitter Connor DeWees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) highlighting the scoring.
Shepherd added a run in the fourth behind an RBI-single by Carr.
Each team scored a run in the fifth before Shepherd added five runs on four hits in the eighth.
The Trojans added three runs in the bottom of the eighth on a three-run double by Cecil Henderson.
Carr went 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored to lead the Rams.
Senior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC) (5.0 IP, 4H, 1 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (2-1) earned the win for the Rams. Delmarcus Talley (1.1 IP, 4 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 1 K, 4 BB) took the loss for the Trojans.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Alderson Broaddus for a 12 p.m. doubleheader in the home opener.
