Shepherd Women Fall to Kutztown in OT; Clayton Reaches 1,000-Point Mark

KUTZTOWN, Pa.  – Kutztown (15-9, 12-6) outscored Shepherd (18-6, 12-6), 17-10, in overtime to record a 78-71 win in PSAC women's basketball action at Kutztown on Saturday. Junior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) hit a layup with 9:15 left in the first quarter to open the game's scoring and surpass the 1,000-point mark (1,001) for her career.

Freshman guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort)  led the Rams with game highs of 26 points and eight assists. Beeman connected on 8-of-22 shots with a 1-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. She was 9-of-11 from the foul line.

Junior guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added 20 points. Clayton tossed in 14 points and now ranks 21st on the Shepherd all-time scoring list with 1,013 points.

Alexis Smith had 23 points and nine rebounds to lead the Golden Bears. Zoe Zerman added 16 points and Brianna Tarabocchia tossed in 11.

Shepherd had a 25-21 lead at the half as McLaughlin and Beeman (11 points each) combined for 22 first-half points.

Kutztown rallied to tie the game at 59-59 after a pair of free throws by Casey Remolde with 17 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Shepherd took a 61-59 advantage after Beeman drained a pair of free throws with three seconds left, but Zerman hit a layup before the buzzer to force the extra session.

Kutztown connected on 8-of-11 free throws and limited Shepherd to a 25 percent field goal percentage (2-8) in overtime to pull away for the win.

Shepherd shot 37.5 percent (24-64) from the floor with a 16.7 percent effort (3-18) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 80 percent (20-25) of their free throws.

Kutztown hit on 45.8 percent (27-59) from the floor with a 32 percent effort (8-25) from three-point range for the game. The Golden Bears connected on 64 percent (16-25) of their free throws.

Kutztown had a 45-28 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 23 turnovers and committed 14. Shepherd recorded 13 steals and Kutztown had eight.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Millersville for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
