SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) scored 16 of his team-high 22 points in the second half to lead Shepherd University (13-12, 9-10) to an 84-83 win over Millersville (13-13, 10-10) in PSAC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night. Lang (1,512) surpassed the 1,500-point mark for his career. The victory extended Shepherd's winning streak to four games.
Lang connected on 6-of-10 field goals with a 6-of-9 effort from beyond the arc. He was 4-of-5 from the line.
Freshman guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) added 16 points. Sophomore guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Junior forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) tossed in 12 points, while freshman guard Phillip Jordan (Rockville, Md./St. Albans) had 11.
Khari Williams had a game-high 28 points to pace Millersville. Justin Nwosu added 21 points, while Mekhi Hendrick had 12.
Shepherd had a 41-31 advantage at the break as the Rams shot 50 percent from the floor (14-28) and 50 percent from three-point range (8-16). McClain-Corley (11) and Preston (9) teamed for 20 first-half points.
Shepherd led by 19 points at 66-47 after a three-pointer by Lang with 10:35 left in the game. Millersville cut the lead to nine points at 74-65 after a Williams jumper with 3:12 remaining.
Williams drained a three-pointer with 21 seconds left to cut the Shepherd lead to 81-79. Jones hit a pair of free throws for the Rams and Nwosu answered with a layup for the Marauders. Lang hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Rams three-point advantage in the last seconds before Gabe Kier's tip-in off a miss beat the buzzer as the Rams held on for the one-point win.
Shepherd connected on 49 percent (24-49) from the floor with a 48.3 percent (14-29) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 75.9 percent (22-29) of their free throws.
Millersville shot 48.5 percent (32-66) from the floor with a 45.8 percent effort (11-24) from three-point range. The Marauders shot 57.1 percent (8-14) from the foul line.
Millersville had a 35-29 edge on the boards. Shepherd forced nine turnovers and committed 10.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to East Stroudsburg for a 3 p.m. contest.
