SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (6-6) gained a pair of wins over Alderson Broaddus (1-7) in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Sunday. The Rams earned a 16-2 win in a game continued from Saturday and added an 18-6 triumph in a later game.
Sophomore designated hitter Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored and junior designated hitter Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored to lead a 13-hit attack in the early game win.
Senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and senior shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) added a two-run blast.
Taylor Cook went 2-for -4 with a solo homer to lead the Battlers.
Sophomore pitcher Cole Dunn (Middletown, Del./Middletown/Radford) (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 4 BB) (2-0) picked up the win for the Rams. Senior reliever Trevor Sprinkle (Whiteford, Md./Calvert Hall) (4.0 IP, 3 H, 7 K, 1 BB) gained the save. Alderson Broaddus starter Ryan Vaney (1.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 BB) (1-1) took the loss.
Shepherd plated eight runs in the first inning in the second game en route to the win. Junior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) and Keer each had a two-run double to key the rally.
The Rams belted four home runs in the game. Doss (2-run), junior third baseman Joey Goldsmith (Vienna, Va./James Madison, Pitt CC) (solo), redshirt-junior pinch hitter Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) (2-run), and Burgreen (solo) all belted round-trippers for the Rams.
Chasen Claus had a pair of hits with a solo homer to lead Alderson Broaddus.\
Senior reliever Ryan Marketell (Webster, N.Y./Webster/Monroe CC) (3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 6 K, 0 BB) (1-0) earned the win. Battler starter Dean Kirby (0.1 IP, 5 H, 7 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Frostburg State for a noon doubleheader.
