Shepherd Baseball Falls at USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – USC Aiken (6-0) posted an 8-5 win over Shepherd University (1-5) in baseball action at Roberto Hernandez Stadium on Sunday.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as senior shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) led off with a single and scored on a double off the bat of junior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School).

USC Aiken tied the game in the second on a solo homer by Luke Leisenring.

The Rams added two runs in the top of the third. Carr reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC). Stewart later scored on a single by sophomore catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland).

The Pacers tied the game in the bottom of the frame behind RBI-singles from Sean McQuillan and Jackson Hannon.

USC Aiken took the lead with three runs in the fifth on a three-run homer by Leisenring.

The Pacers added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by McQuillan.

USC Aiken completed its scoring in the eighth as McQuillan led off with a single and later scored on an error.

Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the ninth. Junior outfielder Colton Henson (Spring Mills, W.Va./Spring Mills/Alderson Broaddus) led off with a walk and Carr reached on a single. Henson scored when junior third baseman Joey Goldsmith (Vienna, Va./James Madison, Pitt CC) walked with the bases loaded. Carr later scored on a wild pitch.

Carr and Doss each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.

Pacer reliever Daniel Wiggins (2-0) (2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 K 0 BB) gained the win. Adam Hane (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0, R, 2 K, 0 BB) earned the save. Senior reliever Tyler Shorter (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (2.0 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (0-2) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Virginia State for a 2 p.m. game.
