BOWIE, Md. – Shepherd (3-3) gained a pair of wins in softball doubleheader action at Bowie State (1-14) on Wednesday. The Rams gained a 29-5 win in game one and added a 7-3 triumph in the nightcap.
The Rams used a 19-hit attack en route to the game one win.
Shepherd plated seven runs in the first inning, eight in the second, and nine in the third to take a commanding 24-0 lead.
Freshman outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) went 3-for-5 with five RBI and five runs scored to pace the Rams. Junior designated player Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) added a 2-for-3 effort with five RBI and three runs scored, while sophomore third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) went 2-for-2 with four RBI.
Freshman pitcher Ashley Mayton (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) (4.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 9 K, 4 BB) earned her first collegiate win. Mayum KInchen-Atkins (1.0 IP 6 H, 14 R, 12 ER, 0 K, 9 BB) (0-2) took the loss.
Trailing 2-0 in the nightcap, Shepherd plated four runs in the second to take a 4-2 lead. Junior second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) belted a two-run single to key the rally.
The Rams added three runs on two hits in the third. Sophomore pinch hitter Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando) had an RBI-double, Purtell had an RBI-single, and Brown added a sacrifice fly.
Bowie State added a run in the seventh on an RBI-double by Shayna Gordon.
Freshman pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) gained the win. Money Brown (7.0 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 1 K, 9 BB) took the loss for the Bulldogs.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to King (Tenn.) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Notes: Shepherd's 29 runs in game one set a program single-game mark for most runs scored in a game … the 29-run effort surpassed the old mark of 25 runs set against West Virginia Tech in 1994.
