Shepherd Baseball Outslugs Ohio Dominican

WILSON, N.C. – Shepherd University (9-7) used a 13-hit attack en route to a 12-7 win over Ohio Dominican (1-9) in baseball action in Wilson, North Carolina on Friday.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning behind an RBI-double from senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC).

Shepherd added a pair of runs in the third. Stewart and junior outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) each reached on an error. Stewart scored on a single by redshirt-junior second baseman Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) and Keer scored from third on a double steal.

The Rams added four runs in the fourth. Junior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) had an RBI-double and Keer smacked  a three-run double to key the scoring.After Ohio Dominican scored an unearned run in the fourth, the Rams added a run in the fifth on an RBI-double off the bat of sophomore outfielder Brennan Holmes (Ona, W.Va./Cabell Midland).

The Panthers added a run in the fifth, Shepherd got a run in the sixth on a solo blast by Stewart.

Ohio Dominican scored a pair of runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 9-4.

Stewart had an RBI-double in the seventh and junior third baseman Joey Goldsmith (Vienna, Va./James Madison, Pitt CC added an RBI-double in the eighth to up the lead to 11-4.

The Panthers plated three runs on two hits in the eighth to cut the lead to 11-7.

Shepherd added a run in the ninth on an RBI-single by Goldsmith to complete the scoring.

Stewart went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Schwartz added a 3-for-5 effort.

Manny Vorhees and Brennen Hunt each had a pair of hits for the Panthers.

Sophomore pitcher Cole Dunn (Middletown, Del./Middletown/Radford)  picked up the win for the Rams to improve to 3-0. Panther starter Grayson Hamilton took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they face California (Pa.) at 2:30 p.m. in Wilson, North Carolina.
