WILSON, N.C. – Sophomore catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) singled home junior pinch-runner Kendall Jordan (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara) in the top of the ninth inning to break a scoreless tie and lift Shepherd University (10-7) to a 1-0 victory over California (Pa.) (5-4) in baseball action in Wilson, North Carolina on Saturday. The Rams extended their winning streak to four games with the victory.
Junior third baseman Joey Goldsmith (Vienna, Va./James Madison, Pitt CC) led off the ninth with a walk and was replaced by Jordan. Jordan moved to second on a sacrifice by graduate student pinch-hitter Trustin Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy/Tampa). Jordan later moved to third on a balk to set the stage for Edwards' game-winning hit.
Edwards went 2-for-3 to lead a six-hit attack for the Rams.
Senior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (8.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 8 K, 1 BB) (2-2) earned the win. Senior reliever Eric O'Brien (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman/Monroe CC) (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB) gained the save. Richie Serignese (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (1-1) took the loss for the Vulcans in relief of starter Dylan Brosky (7.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 12 K, 1 BB).
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they face Lock Haven at 11 a.m. in Wilson, North Carolina.
