SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) completed 23-of-33 passes for 336 yards and five touchdowns to lead #21/19 Shepherd (4-1, 1-1 PSAC East) to a 59-27 win over Shippensburg (4-1, 1-1 PSAC East) in PSAC East football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Dante Witcher took the opening kickoff 99 yards for a score to give Shippensburg a 7-0 lead with14:46 left in the first quarter.
Shepherd tied the game when Bagent teamed with freshman wide receiver Ryan Beach (Frederick, Md./Northwest) on a 13-yard scoring pass with 10:40 left in the first quarter. Senior kicker Hayden August-Scriven (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) added the extra point.
Graduate student running back Chantz Swartz (Mifflin, Pa./Juniata/Lock Haven) scored on a one-yard plunge with 9:25 left in the first quarter to give the Rams a 14-7 lead.
Bagent tossed a five-yard scoring pass to graduate student fullback Michael McCook (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) with 1:16 left in the first quarter to give the Rams a 21-7 advantage.
Bagent found Beach in the back of the end zone for a 22-yard scoring pass to give Shepherd a 28-7 with 10:31 left in the second quarter.
Bagent teamed with a wide-open Ronnie Brown for a 39-yard scoring pass with 4:08 left in the first half.
Brycen Mussina teamed with Ian Sheehan on a 57-yard scoring play with 12 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 35-14 going into the break.
Bagent fired a 24-yard scoring pass to graduate student wide receiver Jonathan Moss (Madison Ala./Bob Jones/Murray State) to open the second half scoring with 13:28 left in the third quarter.
Minutes later Swartz galloped 88 yards for a touchdown to give the Rams a 49-14 lead.
Sophomore running back Ronnie Brown (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) scored on a 50-yard jaunt with 4:22 left in the third period.
Mussina fired a 16-yard scoring pass to Xavier Roman with 9:00 left in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 56-20.
Shepherd got a 28-yard field goal from August-Scriven with 7:16 remaining in the game.
Shippensburg closed out the scoring on a two-yard scoring toss from Mussina to Jake DeLuccia with 2:12 left in the game.
Mussina completed 25-of-42 passes for 283 yards and three scores for Shippensburg.
Beach had five receptions grabs for 82 yards and a pair of scores, while Brown added two grabs for 87 yards for the Rams. Ian Sheehan had five catches for 84 yards for the Raiders.
Brown rushed eight times for a game-high 145 yards for the Rams. Swartz added 12 carries for 120 yards. Mussina had 11 carries for 41 yards for the Raiders.
Shepherd rolled up 628 yards of total offense, with 292 coming on the ground. Shippensburg had 377 yards of total offense.
Junior defensive back Keyshawn Hailey (Fairmont, W.Va./Mt. St. Joseph) led the Rams with six tackles (five solos). Sophomore defensive lineman Malik Holloway (Baltimore, Md./Douglass) added five solo stops and a sack. Demetrius Hudson had seven tackles (five solos) to lead Shippensburg.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. contest.
