LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Junior quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) completed 17-of-26 passes for 330 yards and five touchdowns to lead #16/15 Shepherd (5-1, 2-1 PSAC East) to a 75-21 win over Lock Haven (1-5, 0-3 PSAC East) in PSAC East football action at Lock Haven on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when Bagent teamed with freshman wide receiver Ryan Beach (Frederick, Md./Northwest) on a 23-yard scoring pass with 12:56 left in the first quarter. Senior kicker Hayden August-Scriven (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) added the extra point.
Graduate student running back Chantz Swartz (Mifflin, Pa./Juniata/Lock Haven) scored on a 32-yard jaunt with 8:33 left in the first quarter to give the Rams a 14-0 advantage.
August-Scriven connected on a 43-yard field goal with 5:38 left in the first quarter to up the lead to 17-0. His 43-yarder tied a career-long effort.
Bagent fired a 26-yard scoring strike to Beach with 13:30 left in the second quarter.
Jordan Heisey teamed with Kaden Bittinger on a 74-yard scoring pass moments later to cut the lead to 31-7.
Bagent and sophomore running back Ronnie Brown (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) teamed on a 17-yard scoring play with 7:40 left in the second quarter to increase the lead to 38-7.
Swartz added a four-yard scoring run with 3:40 left in the half.
August-Scriven added a 22-yard field goal with two seconds left in the half to give the Rams a 48-7 lead at the break.
Shepherd opened the second half scoring when Bagent teamed with graduate student wide receiver Josh Gontarek (New Market, Md/Linganore/Shippensburg) on a six-yard scoring pass with 13:58 left in the third quarter.
The score was set up by an interception by graduate student cornerback Tyron McCade (Bowie, Md./Friendship Collegiate Academy/Towson). McCade fumbled and graduate student cornerback John Chaney (Philadelphia, Pa./Shippensburg) recovered and returned recovered the fumble and made a return to the Lock Haven six yard-line.
DeAndre Wakefield went 49 yards for a score for the Bald Eagles minutes later to cut the lead to 55-14.
Brown ran six yards for a score for the Rams with 6:13 left in the third quarter.
Redshirt-sophomore running back Avaughn Holley (Pomfret, Md./McDonough) rushed 17 yards for a score with 3:11 left in the third quarter.
Wakefield added a 16-yard scoring run with 6:36 left in the game to cut the lead to 69-21.
Holley ran 13 yards for a score with 4:28 remaining to complete the scoring.
Heisley completed 16-of-42 passes for 194 yards and a score for Lock Haven.
Beach had four receptions grabs for 65 yards and a pair of scores, while Brown added two grabs for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Bittinger had five receptions for 107 yards and a score for the Bald Eagles.
Swartz rushed 13 times for a game-high 131 yards and two scores for the Rams. Brown added 10 carries for 90 yards. Wakefield had 13 carries for 97 yards and two touchdowns for the Bald Eagles.
Shepherd amassed 638 yards of total offense, with 308 coming on the ground. Lock Haven had 305 yards of total offense.
Senior linebacker Chrys Lane (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) led the Rams with seven tackles (five solos). He also added a sack. Shane Scott had 10 tackles (seven solos) to lead the Bald Eagles.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Millersville for a 2 p.m. game.
Notes: Bagent now owns a pair of Shepherd career passing marks … his five touchdown passes today give him 92 for his career to pass the old mark of 87 held by Jeff Ziemba … Bagent (773) also holds the Shepherd career completions mark after passing Ziemba (752) against Shippensburg … he needs 744 passing yards to surpass Ziemba's career mark of 10,422 … Shepherd's 75 points scored today are one shy of the single-game mark of 76 set against East Stroudsburg in 2019.
