Shepherd Men Fall to Fayetteville State in Overtime in Season Opener

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Jalen Seegars scored a game-high 20 points to lead Fayetteville State (1-0) to a 57-56 overtime win over Shepherd University (0-1) in men's basketball action in the season opener for both schools at the Dave Russell Conference Challenge at the Butcher Center on Friday night. 

Senior forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) scored 12 points and grabbed six boards to lead the Rams. He hit on 5-of-8 field goals with a 1-of-1 effort from three-point range. He drained 1-of-2 free throws. Daggett added a game-high three blocked shots.

Sophomore guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) added 11 points, a game-high six assists, and five rebounds, while senior guard Cam Stephens (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) contributed eight points, five rebounds, and three assists. 

Darian Dixon added 15 points and Cress Worthy added 11 for the Broncos.  

A close game throughout, Shepherd took a 47-45 lead with 2:14 left in regulation after a dunk by Daggett. Seegars hit a jumper with 11 seconds left to force the extra session. 

The Broncos led by five points at 57-52 after a three-point play by Worthy with 2:16 left in overtime. Daggett drained a three and freshman guard Jarod Robinson (Laurel, Md./Glenelg Country School) hit 1-of-2 free throws to get the Rams within a point with 19 seconds left. Fayetteville State held on for the win. 

Shepherd connected on 39.7 percent (23-58) from the floor with a 36.4 percent (8-22) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 33.3 percent (2-6) of their free throws. 

Fayetteville State shot 35.5 percent (22-62) from the floor with a 19 percent effort (4-21) from three-point range. The Broncos shot 69.2 percent (9-13) from the foul line. 

Shepherd had a 40-39 edge in rebounding. Shepherd forced 13 turnovers and committed 19. 

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Bowie State for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
