Shepherd Women Run Past Davis and Elkins in Season Opener

FROSTBURG, Md.  – Junior guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) recorded 24 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and four steals to lead Shepherd University (1-0) to a 90-61 win over Davis & Elkins (0-1) in women's basketball action at the PSAC/MEC Challenge at Frostburg State on Friday evening. 

Beeman hit on 9-of-16 field goals with a 2-of-4 effort from beyond the arc. She was 4-of-4 from the foul line.  

Senior forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 15 points, while junior forward Cara Minor (Hundred, W.Va./North Marion) was also in double figures with 10 points. 

The Senators were led by Dream Cherry with 13 points. Allie Taylor added 11 and Payton Mohler tossed in eight. 

Shepherd shot 44.6 percent (33-74) from the floor with a 35.3 percent effort (6-17) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 85.7 percent (18-21) of their free throws. 

Davis & Elkins hit on 37.9 percent (22-58) from the floor with a 34.8 percent effort (8-23) from three-point range for the game. The Senators connected on 52.9 percent (9-17) of their free throws. 

Shepherd had a 36-34 edge in rebounding. The Rams had 15 turnovers and forced 20. Shepherd recorded 12 steals and D&E had six. 

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they face host Frostburg State at 3 p.m. in final day action of the PSAC/MEC Challenge.
