FROSTBURG, Md. – Shepherd University (2-0) outscored Frostburg State, 15-3, in the final quarter en route to a 72-60 win over the Bobcats (0-2) in women's basketball action at the PSAC/MEC Challenge at Frostburg State on Saturday.
The Rams were led by junior guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) with a game-high 28 points. Beeman hit on 9-of-17 field goals with a 4-of-8 effort from beyond the arc. She was 6-of-6 from the foul line. She added seven rebounds and a game-high five assists.
Graduate student forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 21 points and eight rebounds, while graduate student guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) tossed in 17 points.
Shelby Funchess led the Bobcats with 15 points and eight rebounds. Ciara Thomas added 11 points and seven boards.
Shepherd shot 43.9 percent (25-57) from the floor with a 23.5 percent effort (4-17) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 85.7 percent (18-21) of their free throws.
Frostburg State hit on 39.7 percent (22-58) from the floor with a 25 percent effort (3-12) from three-point range for the game. The Bobcats connected on 78.6 percent (11-14) of their free throws.
Frostburg State had a 34-24 edge in rebounding. The Rams had 10 turnovers and forced 18. Each team recorded five steals.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Bowie State for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
