SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Graduate student guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) scored a game-high 22 points and graduate student forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead Shepherd University (3-0) to a 74-56 win over Bowie State (0-2) in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.
McLaughlin connected on 9-of-19 field goals with a 4-of-10 effort from three-point range.
Junior guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) posted a nice all-around effort with 10 points, 12 assists, and eight rebounds.
Talanya Hutton led the Bulldogs with 18 points, four rebounds, and four steals. Anii Harris added 11 points.
Shepherd had a 44-23 lead at halftime as McLaughlin tallied 17 first-half points.
Shepherd shot 52.6 percent (30-57) from the floor with a 31.6 percent effort (6-19) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 80 percent (8-10) of their free throws.
Bowie State hit on 33.9 percent (21-62) from the floor with a 20 percent effort (2-10) from three-point range for the game. The Bulldogs connected on 54.5 percent (12-22) of their free throws.
Shepherd had a 40-31 edge in rebounding. The Rams had 25 turnovers and forced 18. Bowie State recorded 13 steals and Shepherd had 10.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Lincoln for a 2 p.m. contest.
