SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Graduate student guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) scored 24 points and junior guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) added 22 to lead Shepherd University (5-0) to an 88-60 win over Virginia Union (1-2) in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Monday.
McLaughlin hit on 9-of-15 field goals with a 3-of-7 effort from three-point range. She was 3-of-6 from the foul line. She added five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Beeman connected on 7-of-12 field goals with a 5-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. She was 3-of-3 from the charity stripe. She added game highs of seven rebounds and seven assists.
Graduate student forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) tied Beeman for game-high rebounding honors with seven boards.
Taniah Johnson led the Panthers with a game-high 25 points. Ny Langley added eight points, six rebounds, and three assists.
Shepherd shot 44.8 percent (30-67) from the floor with a 46.2 percent effort (12-26) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 69.6 percent (16-23) of their free throws.
Virginia Union hit on 33.9 percent (21-62) from the floor with a 45 percent effort (9-20) from three-point range for the game. The Panthers connected on 60 percent (9-15) of their free throws.
Shepherd had a 49-34 edge in rebounding. The Rams had 18 turnovers and forced 22. Shepherd recorded 10 steals and Virginia Union had seven.
The Rams return to action on Friday, Dec. 4 when they host Gannon at 5:30 p.m.
