SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Graduate student guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while graduate student forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) added 19 points and six boards to lead Shepherd University (6-0) to a 63-59 win over #7/9 Gannon (4-1) in PSAC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Friday.
McLaughlin hit on 6-of-10 field goals with a 4-of-4 effort from three-point range. She was 4-of-4 from the foul line. She added three steals and an assist.
Clayton connected on 9-of-14 field goals. She was 1-of-1 from the charity stripe. She added a block and a steal.
Junior guard Abby Beeman (Ridgeley, W.Va./Frankfort)added eight points, nine assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Emily Poling led the Golden Knights with 12 points and three steals. Emma Wright added 11 points and three blocked shots. Delaney Dogan added four points and nine rebounds.
Shepherd had a 29-24 lead at the break behind 13 first-half points from McLaughlin.
The Rams led by as many as 14 points in the fourth period, but Gannon rallied to with two points at 61-59 on a three-pointer by Sydney Mitchell with 41 seconds left.
McLaughlin drained a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining to seal the win.
Shepherd shot 46.3 percent (25-54) from the floor with a 43.8 percent effort (7-16) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 100 percent (6-6) of their free throws.
Gannon hit on 38.3 percent (23-60) from the floor with a 27.3 percent effort (6-22) from three-point range for the game. The Golden Knights connected on 87.5 percent (7-8) of their free throws.
Gannon had a 34-31 edge in rebounding. Both teams had 22 turnovers. Shepherd had 12 steals and Gannon recorded 14.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Clarion for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
