Shepherd Men Edged by Virginia Union

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Keleaf Tate hit a jumper with eight seconds left in regulation to lift Virginia Union (6-2) to a 56-54 win over Shepherd (5-3) in men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday afternoon. 

Sophomore guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Rams. He connected on 7-of-10 field goals with a 5-of-7 effort from three-point range. He was 3-of-3 from the foul line. 

Senior forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) added 13 points. Junior guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) added a team-high seven rebounds and four points, while sophomore guard Jordan Gibson (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson/Presbyterian) contributed seven points and six rebounds. 

Tate, Darius Sims, and Robert Osborne each had 10 points to lead the Panthers. 

Shepherd had a 29-24 lead at the half behind 11 first half points form McClain-Corley. 

Shepherd trailed by as many as five points late in the contest but rallied as McClain Corley drained a three with 12 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 54-54. 

Shepherd connected on 35.7 percent (20-36) from the floor with a 20 percent (7-35) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 87.5 percent (7-8) of their free throws. \

Virginia Union shot 47.1 percent (24-51) from the floor with a 22.2 percent effort (4-18) from three-point range. The Panthers shot 66.7 percent (4-6) from the charity stripe.

Virginia Union had a 32-31 rebounding edge. Each team had 15 turnovers. Shepherd had seven steals and Virginia Union had five.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
