Shepherd Men Fall at Pitt-Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa.  – Sophomore guard Jordan Gibson (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson/Presbyterian) scored a game-high 18 points, but Pitt-Johnstown (7-2, 3-0 PSAC) held on for a 65-64 win over Shepherd (5-4, 0-2 PSAC) in PSAC men's basketball action at Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday night. 

Gibson connected on 7-of-13 field goals with a 4-of-9 performance from three-point range.  

Sophomore guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) added 16 points. Senior forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) posted a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior guard Cam Stephens (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) contributed a team-high six assists. 

Joe Batt had 14 points and eight rebounds to pace the Mountain Cats. Fred Mulbah added 13 points and 11 assists, while John Paul Kroma had 12 points, seven assists, and three blocked shots.

Shepherd had a 31-28 lead at halftime.

The hard-fought game featured 13 lead changes and seven ties.

UPJ took a 62-58 lead with 3:20 left in regulation on a three-pointer by Andy Zuchelli. Gibson drained a three-pointer for the Rams with 1:07 left to cut the lead to 62-61. 

Batt scored on a three-point play (layup, free throw) with 21 seconds left to increase the UPJ lead to 65-61. Gibson fired in a three-pointer for the Rams in the final seconds to complete the scoring. 

Shepherd connected on 37.3 percent (22-59) from the floor with a 36.1 percent (13-36) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 70 percent (7-10) of their free throws. 

Pitt-Johnstown shot 48.2 percent (27-56) from the floor with a 36.4 percent effort (8-22) from three-point range. The Mountain Cats shot 60 percent (3-5) from the charity stripe.

Shepherd had a 36-31 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced nine turnovers and committed eight. Shepherd had a 6-5 edge in steals.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Indiana (Pa.) for a 3 p.m. game.
