ETTRICK, Va. – Junior guard Abby Beeman (Ridgeley, W.Va./Frankfort) scored a game-high 29 points and graduate student guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) added 22 to lead Shepherd University (8-0) to a 76-69 win over Virginia State (4-5) in women's basketball action at Virginia State on Saturday.
Beeman hit on 10-of-17 field goals with a 1-of-4 effort from three-point range. She was 8-of-9 from the foul line. Beeman added eight assists, seven rebounds, and seven steals.
McLaughlin hit on 7-of-17 shots from the floor with a 4-of-10 effort from beyond the arc. She was 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.
Junior forward Cara Minor (Hundred, W.Va./North Marion) added 12 points and eight rebounds, while graduate student forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John's) contributed eight points and eight boards.
Natalie Leaks led the Golden Eagles with 22 points and eight rebounds.
Shepherd shot 46.4 percent (26-56) from the floor with a 41.2 percent effort (7-17) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 85 percent (17-20) of their free throws.
Virginia State hit on 39.1 percent (25-64) from the floor with a 16.7 percent effort (2-12) from three-point range for the game. The Trojans connected on 85 percent (17-20) of their free throws.
Virginia State had a 38-36 edge in rebounding. Shepherd forced 15 turnovers and committed 20. Shepherd had 10 steals while Virginia State recorded nine.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
