Shepherd Baseball Splits with Bloomsburg in Season Opener

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (1-1, 1-1 PSAC East) split PSAC doubleheader action with Bloomsburg (1-1, 1-1 PSAC East) at Fairfax Field on Friday, The Huskies posted a 6-4 win in game one and the Rams earned the split with a 6-1 triumph in the nightcap. Shepherd recorded its first conference win as a member of the PSAC.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap on a two-run homer by senior infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky). 

The Rams added two runs in the second behind an RBI-single by junior catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and an RBI-double off the bat of graduate student outfielder Caleb Walls (State College, Pa./State College Area/Maryland). 

Edwards added a two-run blast down the left-field line in the fourth to give the Rams a 6-0 lead. 

Wyatt Metzger belted a solo blast in the seventh for the Huskies.

Sophomore third baseman Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion), Walls, and Edwards each had two hits for the Rams. \

Carter Chasanov and Tyler Wiik each had two hits for Bloomsburg. 

Senior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 5 K, 1 BB) (1-0) earned the win. Ed Herbener (3.1 IP, 8 H,  6 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Huskies. 

Bloomsburg scored three unearned runs in the fourth in game one to rally for a 6-4 win. Kyle OFier hit a three-run homer to lift Bloomsburg to the win. 

Walls went 2-for-4 to pace the Rams. 

Chad Cooperman (5.0 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 8 Ks, 3 BB) (1-0) picked up the win for the Huskies. Nate Baranski (2.0 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 Ks, 0 BB) earned the save. Senior pitcher Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (2.0 IP, 3 UER, 3 H, 2 Ks, 0 BB) (0-1) took the loss. 

The two teams return to action on Saturday for a noon doubleheader at Bloomsburg.
