Shepherd Baseball Drops Pair at Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd University (1-3, 1-3 PSAC East) dropped a pair of games in PSAC doubleheader action with Bloomsburg (3-1, 3-1 PSAC East) at Bloomsburg on Saturday, The Huskies held off the Rams for a 10-9 win in game one and added a 5-0 win in the nightcap. 

Shepherd scored a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI-single by senior infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior outfielder Easy Goita (Bronx, N.Y/James Monroe/CCBC). 

The Rams took a 3-0 lead with a run in the second on an RBI-single off the bat of senior designated hitter Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School).   

The Huskies got on the board on a solo homer by Anthony Viggiano in the third. 

Bloomsburg took a 7-3 lead with six runs in the third. A three-run homer by Carter Chasanov keyed the rally. 

Shepherd answered back in the sixth on a two-run blast by graduate student outfielder Caleb Walls (State College, Pa./State College Area/Maryland) to cut the lead to 7-5. 

The Huskies plated a pair of runs in the sixth to take a 9-5 advantage. 

Shepherd rallied in the top of the seventh to score four runs on three hits and two errors to tie the game. Walls and sophomore third baseman Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) each had RBI-singles to key the scoring. 

Wyatt Metzger walked in the bottom of the frame and was replaced by pinch-runner Brady Gibble. Gibble scored the game-winner on a single by Gianni Sinatore. 

Walls went 3-for-3 and Goita and Daugherty each added a pair of hits for the Rams.

Kyle OFier went 3-for-4 for the Huskies. 

Nate Baranski (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 UER, 0 K, 0 BB) (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Huskies. Senior reliever Eric O'Brien (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman/Monroe CC) (2.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss. 

Bloomsburg got a strong pitching performance from Nick Stoner with the shutout win in the nightcap. 

Jared Burcin went 2-for-4 and drove in a run to lead the Huskies offense. 

Stoner (6.0 IP, 3 H, 10 Ks, 4 BB) (1-0) picked up the win for the Huskies. Sophomore pitcher Tanner Dixon (Frederick, Md./Frederick) (2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 Ks, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss. 

The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Shippensburg for a noon doubleheader
