Shepherd Baseball Splits with Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd University (2-4, 2-4 PSAC East) dropped a pair of games in PSAC doubleheader action with Shippensburg (2-6, 2-4 PSAC East) at Shippensburg on Saturday, The Rams dropped a 5-3 decision in game one and earned the split with an 11-3 triumph in the nightcap. 

After scoring a pair of runs in the second inning in the nightcap, Shepherd added three more in the third with a two-run single by junior outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) keying the rally. 

The Raiders scored three runs on three hits in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-3. 

Senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) smacked a solo blast in the fifth to up the lead to 6-3. 

Shepherd completed the scoring with five runs in the seventh. Three Rams drove in a run by walking with the bases loaded as Shepherd took advantage of six walks in the inning. 

Sophomore third baseman Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and senior infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) each scored three runs for the Rams. 

Sophomore pitcher Tanner Dixon (Frederick, Md./Frederick) (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 Ks, 0 BB) (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Rams. Kiernen Higgins (6.0 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 12 Ks, 5 BB) (0-3) took the loss.

Stewart went 2-for-3 with a solo homer in game one to lead the Rams. 

The Raiders got solo round-trippers form Ben Werkheimer and Chase Zurawski in the win. 

Werkheimer went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored and Zurawski was 1-for-3 and drove in three runs. 

Kyle Lysy (5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 4 BB) (1-2) Gained eth Win for Shippensburg. Austen Labarre (0.1 IP, 0 H, R 0 K, 0 BB) notched the save. Senior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (1-1) took the loss.  

The two teams return to action on Sunday for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
