SHEPHERSDTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (3-5, 3-5 PSAC East) split a pair of games in PSAC doubleheader action with Shippensburg (3-7, 3-5 PSAC East) at Fairfax Field on Sunday. The Rams dropped a 7-2 decision in game one and gained the split with an 8-5 triumph in the nightcap.
Trailing 4-1 in the nightcap, Shepherd plated four runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. A two-run single by junior outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) keyed the rally.
The Rams added three more runs in the sixth as senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) and sophomore third baseman Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) each drove in a run.
Shippensburg added a run in the seventh behind an RBI-single by Chase Zurawski.
Senior designated hitter Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) led the Rams with a 2-for-4 effort and a pair of runs scored.
Zurawski and Ben Werkheimer each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Senior reliever Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (1.2 IP, 2H, 1 ER, 3 Ks, 0 BB) (1-1) earned the win. Junior pitcher Cole Dunn (Middletown, Del./Middletown/Radford (2.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1K, 0 BB) earned the save. Austen Labarre took the loss (0-1) for Shippensburg.
Werkheimer went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored to lead the Raiders in game one. He belted a two-run homer in the sixth. Jordan Yoder added a solo blast.
Kaleb Sophy (7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 11 Ks, 6 BB) (1-1) gained the complete-game win. Senior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC) (4.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 6 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday for a noon doubleheader at Kutztown.
