Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Shepherd University (5-5, 5-5 PSAC East) rapped 23 hits on the day en route to a sweep over Kutztown (10-5, 5-5 PSAC East) in PSAC doubleheader action at Kutztown on Friday. The Rams gained an 8-2 win in game one and added a 15-7 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in game one on a solo blast by sophomore third baseman Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion).

The Rams took control of the contest with seven runs in the fourth. Senior infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) smacked a two-run double and senior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) added a two-run single to key the rally.

The Golden Bears got on the board in the sixth on a two-run single by Antonio Rossillo.

Carr went 2-for-4 to lead the Rams.

Senior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (2-1) gained the win for the Rams. Dominic Proietto (3.0 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (0-2) took the loss.

The Rams had five players with multiple hits in the nightcap win.

Senior outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic), junior infielder Tommy Gibson (Sicklerville, NJ/Williamstown/Penn State/Rowan), and Carr each had three hits to lead the Rams. Car drove in three runs and scored a pair, while Gibson drove in a run and scored three.

Graduate student outfielder Caleb Walls (State College, Pa./State College Area/Maryland) posted a 2-for-4 effort with four runs batted in and three runs scored. Daugherty went 2-for-3 with four runs scored.

Collin Bishop went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs to lead the Golden Bears.

Sophomore reliever Nat Hodgkinson (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) (2.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (1-0) earned the win. Kutztown starter Matt Ziminsky (3.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (2-1) took the loss.

The two teams return to action on Saturday for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
