SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (7-5, 7-5 PSAC East) scored 33 runs on 30 hits on the day en route to a sweep over Kutztown (10-7, 5-7 PSAC East) in PSAC doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams gained a 22-8 win in game one and added an 11-3 triumph in the nightcap to run their win streak to five games.
Graduate student outfielder Caleb Walls (State College, Pa./State College Area/Maryland) and senior outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) each belted a pair of home runs to lead a 21-hit attack for the Rams in game one.
Trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth the Rams responded with 14 runs in the bottom of the frame. Keer had a three-run double and a three-run blast to key the rally.
Keer went 3-for-4 with eight RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Walls added a 3-for-3 effort with four RBI and four runs scored.
Junior infielder Tommy Gibson (Sicklerville, NJ/Williamstown/Penn State/Rowan) and junior catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) each added three hits.
Ethan Martini went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs for the Golden Bears.
Sophomore pitcher Cole Dunn (Middletown, Del./Middletown/Radford) (0.1 IP,1 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Rams. Steve Wagner (0.1, 6 H, 8 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (1-1) took the loss for Kutztown.
Shepherd scored four runs in the fourth in the nightcap to grab a 5-1 lead. Senior infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) launched a leadoff home run down the left-field line and Walls smacked a three-run double to highlight the scoring.
The Rams added four more runs in the fifth on a grand slam off the bat of Doss.
Doss and Walls each went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs to pace the Rams.
Antonio Rossillo went 1-for-2 with a solo homer to lead the Golden Bears.
Junior pitcher Nick Trabacchi (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/UMBC) (5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 4K, 2 BB) (1-0) earned the win for the Rams. Kutztown starter Gavin Moretski (3.2 IP, 3 H, 5 ER, 4 K, 5 BB) (1-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to West Chester for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
