WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Shepherd University (7-7, 7-7 PSAC East) was swept by West Chester (8-1, 8-2 PSAC East) in PSAC doubleheader action at West Chester on Thursday. West Chester recorded a 9-1 win in game one and added a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.
West Chester took a 4-0 lead in the first inning in game one as Luke Cantwell had a three-run triple to key the rally.
Nick D'Amore added a two-run homer in the second to give West Chester a 6-0 lead.
Shepherd plated a run in the third as sophomore third baseman Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) walked and later scored when senior infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) walked with the bases loaded.
The Golden Rams added a pair of runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Mike Ferrara went 3-for-3 to lead West Chester. Cantwell added a 2-for-4 effort and drove in four runs.
Senior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) and junior infielder Tommy Gibson (Sicklerville, NJ/Williamstown/Penn State/Rowan) each went 1-for-3 for the Rams.
Braeden Fausnaught (6.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 5 BB) (1-0) earned the win for the Golden Rams. Senior pitcher Trevor Sprinkle (Whiteford, Md./Calvert Hall) (1.0 IP, 1 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
West Chester took a 3-0 lead in the first in the nightcap. Zack Wright and Ferrara each drove in a run to key the scoring.
Shepherd tied the game with three runs in the top of the third. Junior catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) led off with a triple, and junior shortstop Brennan Holmes (Ona, W.Va./Cabell Midland) followed with a walk. Gibson singled to plate Edwards and graduate student outfielder Caleb Walls (State College, Pa./State College Area/Maryland) followed with a two-run single to tie the game.
The Golden Rams scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to secure the win. Cantwell had an RBI-double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Daller. Wright scored on a balk for the other tally.
Brian Verratti went 2-for-3 for West Chester.
Joe Sperone (7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) (2-0) gained the win. Senior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (3.0 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (2-2) took the loss.
The two teams return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
