MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Shepherd University (13-7, 11-7 PSAC East) swept #21 Millersville (9-6, 6-4 PSAC East) in PSAC doubleheader action at Millersville on Saturday. The Rams recorded an 8-4 win in game one and added an 8-6 win in the nightcap.
Clinging to a 3-1 lead in game one, Shepherd plated five runs in the seventh to pull away for the win. Senior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) belted a three-run homer to key the scoring outburst.
Millersville rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to complete the scoring. Jimmy Losh had a two-run homer to key the rally.
Graduate student outfielder Caleb Walls (State College, Pa./State College Area/Maryland) went 3-for-4, drove in two runs, and scored another for the Rams.
Luke Trainer went 3-for-4 and Losh added a 2-for-3 effort for the Marauders.
Senior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 10 K, 2 BB) (3-2) gained the win for the Rams. Bobby Dorta (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 4 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the second inning in the nightcap with a two-run single by sophomore shortstop Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) keying the rally.
Senior outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) smacked a two-run single in the third to up the lead to 5-0.
After Millersville got a run in the third, Shepherd added another when Daugherty scored when senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) walked with the bases loaded.
Millersville cut the lead to 6-5 behind two-run homers by Justin Taylor and Bren Taylor in the fourth.
Senior third baseman Joey Goldsmith (Vienna, Va./James Madison/Pitt CC) belted a two-run homer in the fifth and Losh hit a solo blast in the sixth for the Marauders to complete the scoring.
Junior outfielder Brennan Holmes (Ona, W.Va./Cabell Midland) went 2-for-2 to lead the Rams.
Bren Taylor and Losh each had three hits for the Marauders.
Senior reliever Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 5 Ks, 0 BB) (2-1) earned the win. Senior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC) (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB) secured the save. Christian Wingard (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss for Millersville.
The two teams return to action on Monday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
