LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –Shepherd University (14-9, 12-9 PSAC East) split with Lock Haven (5-13, 5-13 PSAC East) in PSAC doubleheader action at Lock Haven on Friday. The Rams rallied for a 4-3 win in game one and Lock Haven rallied for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in game one in the first inning as graduate student outfielder Caleb Walls (State College, Pa./State College Area/Maryland) doubled and later scored on a double off the bat of senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC). \
After Lock Haven scored a run in the second to tie the game, Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a solo blast off the bat of senior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School).
The Bald Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the sixth on a two-run homer by Jake Mastill.
Shepherd scored a pair of runs in the seventh to gain the win. Walls walked and Carr followed with a single. The pair later scored when Stewart singled and advanced to second on the throw.
Senior pitcher Steve Bowley (Medford, N.J./Holy Cross Academy/Cumberland County) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 8 K, 1 BB) (4-2) gained the win for the Rams. Senior reliever Trevor Sprinkle (Whiteford, Md./Calvert Hall) (1.0 IP,0 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) picked up the save. Justin Lichtenwainer (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (0-2) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on a solo homer by sophomore shortstop Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion).
Lock Haven tied the game on an RBI-double by Blaise Zeide in the second.
Carr blasted a two-run homer in the third to give the Rams a 3-1 advantage.
The Bald Eagles scored four runs in the sixth with a three-run homer by Mike O'Halloran keying the rally.
The Rams added a run in the seventh as senior infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) walked with the bases loaded to plate Daugherty, but Lock Haven held on for the win.
Austin Gilpin (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K, 1 BB) (1-1) earned the win. Brandon Lingenfelter (1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) got the save. Junior pitcher Nick Trabacchi (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West/UMBC) (5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 9 K, 2 BB) (2-1) took the loss.
The two teams return to action on Saturday for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
