LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Shepherd University (24-9, 20-8 PSAC East) split with Lock Haven (9-15, 9-15 PSAC East) in PSAC softball doubleheader action at Lock Haven on Saturday. The Rams earned an 8-0 win in five innings in game one and Lock Haven rallied for a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 5-0 lead in the first inning in game one with a two-run single by sophomore catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) highlighting the scoring.
The Rams added two more runs in the second on a two-run blast off the bat of sophomore designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke).
Shepherd added a run in the fourth as junior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) walked and later scored when junior first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando) reached on a fielder's choice.
Davis went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs to lead the Rams. Senior outfielder Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford), senior shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills), senior second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier), and Mantz each added a pair of hits
Sophomore pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (5.0 IP, 2 H, 5 K, 0 BB) (9-3) gained the win. Jada Schellhammer (0.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (4-3) took the loss.
Lock Haven took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap as Riley McClellan walked and later scored when Kierston Long reached on an error.
Shepherd tied the game in the third as Purtell doubled and scored on a single by Davis.
The Rams took a 2-1 lead in the fifth as freshman catcher Olivia Reese (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) led off with a single, went to third on a double by Purtell, and scored on a single by Brown.
Lock Haven scored a pair of runs in the fifth to gain the win. Summer Peters had an RBI-triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Haley Lestician.
Purtell and Brown each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Madison Waltman (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 Ks, 1 BB) (4-6) gained the win. Senior pitcher Cheyenne Van Pelt (South Riding, Va./Freedom) (6.0 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 Ks, 4 BB) (2-2) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to East Stroudsburg for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
