SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (11-7) scored 27 runs on the day en route to a sweep of Alderson Broaddus (5-9) in non-conference doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Tuesday. The Rams recorded a 15-6 win in game one and added a 12-2 triumph in the nightcap.
Senior third baseman Joey Goldsmith (Vienna, Va./James Madison, Pitt CC) went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored to pace the Rams in the game one win. He belted a three-run homer in the third.
Graduate student outfielder Caleb Walls (State College, Pa./State College Area/Maryland) added a pair of hits and drove in two runs. Senior infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) added a two-run blast in the fifth.
Brandon Gutierrez and Cameron Sheetz each had a pair of hits for the Battlers.
Senior reliever Trevor Sprinkle (Whiteford, Md./Calvert Hall) (2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (1-1) gained the victory. Bryan Roman (2.1 IP, 3 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 2 K, 4 BB) (0-1) took the loss for Alderson Broaddus.
Junior outfielder Brennan Holmes (Ona, W.Va./Cabell Midland) went 3-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to lead a 12-hit attack in the nightcap. He belted a two-run homer in the fifth. Senior outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) added a 2-for-3 effort with a two-run blast in the fifth.
Shepherd also got a solo blast from senior first baseman Dalton Stewart (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro/UMBC) in the fifth.
Lane Casto and Alex Perez each had a pair of hits for Alderson Broaddus.
Sophomore reliever Nate Hodgkinson (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) (4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (2-0) gained the win in the nightcap. Battler starter Will Knight (4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Millersville for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
