FROSTBURG, Md. – Iyahanna Williams scored a game-high 33 points to lead Alderson Broaddus (1-0) to an 83-67 win over Shepherd University (0-1) in women's basketball action at the Jim Crawley Conference Challenge at Frostburg State on Friday evening in the season opener for both schools.
Freshman guard Peyton Grant (Plymouth, Maine/Dexter Regional) paced the Rams with 15 points. She connected on 5-of-13 shots with a 5-of-9 effort from three-point range.
Senior forward Cara Minor (Hundred, W.Va./North Marion) and sophomore guard/forward Sydney Bolles (Elkview, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) each added 13 points. Bolles also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Meghan Shipley (Middletown, Md./Middletown) was also in double figures with 11 points.
Amil Mitchell added 19 points for the Battlers, while Londaisha Smith tossed in 14.
Shepherd rallied from a 23-14 deficit at the end of the first quarter to tie the game at the half at 37-37. Grant had 12 first half points to lead the Rams.
The Rams outscored Alderson Broaddus, 22-15, in the third quarter to take a 59-52 advantage into the final stanza.
The Battlers responded with a 31-8 effort in the fourth quarter to gain the win.
Shepherd shot 41.3 percent (26-63) from the floor with a 40 percent (10-25) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 55.6 percent (5-9) of their free throws.
Alderson Broaddus shot 45.7 percent (32-70) from the floor with a 23.1 percent effort (3-13) from three-point range. The Battlers shot 66.7 percent (16-24) from the foul line.
Alderson Broaddus had a 42-28 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 10 turnovers and committed 20.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they face host Frostburg State for a 3 p.m. contest.
