Shepherd Men Knock Off Wheeling in Overtime

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Junior guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) scored a game-high 25 points to lift Shepherd University (1-1) to a 77-73 overtime win over Wheeling (0-2) in men's basketball action at the Atlantic Region Crossover at West Liberty on Saturday. 

McClain-Corley connected on 8-of-20 field goals with a 3-of-10 effort from three-point range. He was 6-of-7 from the foul line. He also added eight rebounds and a game-high five assists. 

Junior guard Phillip Jordan (Rockville, Md./St. Albans) contributed 15 points, six boards, and four assists. Sophomore guard Aidan Hughley (York, Pa./York Suburban) added 14 points and seven rebounds. 

Senior guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) added seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds. 

Marcus Johnson had 17 points to lead the Cardinals. John Korte added 16 points and Brent Price tossed in 15. 

Shepherd had a 38-34 lead at the half. 

Johnson hit a layup with 13 seconds left in regulation for the Cardinals to force the extra session. 

Shepherd outscored Wheeling, 10-6, in overtime to earn the win. Jordan had five points to lead the overtime effort.

Shepherd connected on 49.2 percent (30-61) from the floor with a 38.5 percent (10-26) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 63.6 percent (7-11) of their free throws. 

Wheeling shot 45.5 percent (25-55) from the floor with a 36.8 percent effort (7-19) from three-point range. The Cardinals shot 84.2 percent (16-19) from the foul line. 

Shepherd had a 34-24 advantage in rebounds. The Rams forced 10 turnovers and committed 11. 

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Frostburg State at 6 p.m.
