SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Jason Murphy hit a pair of free throws with four seconds left in regulation to lift Frostburg State (1-2) to a 58-57 win over Shepherd University (1-2) in men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.
Junior guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) led the Rams with 12 points. He was 5-of-13 from the floor with a 2-of-6 effort from three-point range.
Junior guard Phillip Jordan (Rockville, Md./St. Albans) and senior guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) each added 10 points. Preston also tied Frostburg State's Murphy with a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Jarod Robinson (Laurel, Md./Glenelg Country School) tossed in nine points.
Murphy had a game-high 21 points for the Bobcats. Tairell Fletcher added 16 points.
Shepherd had a 37-33 lead at the break.
Neither team led by more than five points in the second half. Shepherd held a 57-55 lead after Jordan hit 1-of-2 free throws with 1:53 remaining. Murphy hit 3-of-4 free throws in the game's final minute to give the Bobcats the win.
Shepherd connected on 42.6 percent (23-54) from the floor with a 30.4 percent (7-23) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 66.7 percent (4-6) of their free throws.
Frostburg State shot 41.4 percent (24-58) from the floor with a 30.8 percent effort (4-13) from three-point range. The Bobcats shot 50 percent (6-12) from the foul line.
Frostburg State had a 38-31 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced seven turnovers and committed 11.
The Rams return to action next Tuesday when they host Lincoln University for a 1 p.m. contest.
