AMERICUS, Ga. – Shepherd (2-4) dropped a 4-3 decision to Georgia Southwestern State (4-6) in baseball action at Georgia Southwestern State on Sunday.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior infielder Ryan Haddaway (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) led off with a single and later scored on an RBI-single off the bat of graduate student outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic).
The Canes plated four runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Anthony Angelino had a two-run double and Reid Ragsdale and Gregory Wozniak each added RBI-single to key the rally.
The Rams added a pair of runs in the eighth as Haddaway singled and scored on a two-run blast off the bat of graduate student infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky).
Schwartz went 2-for-3 and Haddaway had a 3-for-4 performance to lead the Rams.
Ragsdale, Angelino, and Hunter Foster each had a pair of hits for the Hurricanes.
Dalton Cameron (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 0 BB) (1-1) picked up the win for the Canes. Brandt Sundean (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) earned the save. Sophomore pitcher Chris Chaney (Falling Waters, W.Va./Saint James School/Maryland) (5.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 6 K, 0 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Rams.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Lincoln University for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
