SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Brent Pegram scored 18 points and Philip Alston added 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead California (Pa.) (15-5, 10-4 PSAC) to a 64-61 win over Shepherd University (9-12, 5-10 PSAC) in PSAC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Monday night.
Senior forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) scored a game-high 21 points to pace the Rams. He hit on 7-of-14 shots with a 4-of-10 effort from three-point range. He was 3-of-5 from foul line. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
Senior guard Cam Stephens (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) added 14 points and tied Cal's Zyan Collins with a game-high six assists. Junior guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) added a game-high four steals.
Keith Palek had 11 points and Collins tossed in 10 for the Vulcans.
Shepherd had a 33-30 lead at the break.
A close game throughout, Cal took the lead for good at 60-59 on three-pointer by Pegram with 1:29 left in the game. Shepherd got to within a point at 62-61 after Daggett hit 2-of-3 free throws with 17 seconds left. Palek hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left and Cal held on for the win.
Shepherd connected on 41.5 percent (22-53) from the floor with a 33.3 percent (10-30) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 58.3 percent (7-12) of their free throws.
California shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the floor with a 29.6 percent effort (8-27) from three-point range. The Vulcans shot 80 percent (8-10) from the foul line.
Cal had a 35-30 edge on the boards. Shepherd forced 11 turnovers and committed 12. Shepherd had a 9-8 advantage in steals.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Kutztown at 3 p.m.
