SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (7-6) plated 12 runs in the seventh inning en route to a 15-1 win over Alderson Broaddus (0-11) in baseball action at Fairfax Field on Wednesday.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when junior outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) hit a two-out double, stole third base, and scored on an error.
The Rams added two more runs in the fifth on a two-run blast by junior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb).
Alderson Broaddus scored a run in the sixth when Joey Alcorn reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a balk.
Shepherd scored 12 runs on seven hits in the seventh. A three-run homer by graduate student infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) and a three-run round-tripper by Mulhall highlighting the rally.
Daggers went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and three runs scored to lead the Rams. Junior third baseman Ryan Haddaway (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville), Mulhall, and Schwartz each added a pair of hits.
Manuel Villalobos went 3-for-4 for the Battlers.
Senior pitcher Cole Dunn (Middletown, Del./Middletown/Radford) (4.0 IP 3 H, 0 R, 4 K, 0 BB) (1-0) earned the win for the Rams. Chandler Ballenger (5.0 IP 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 9 K, 0 BB) (0-1) took the loss for Alderson Broaddus.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Bloomsburg for a 2 p.m. contest.
