SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (8-7-1, 3-1-1 PSAC East) split the weekend series with Bloomsburg (11-7-1, 3-2-1 PSAC East) as they posted a 5-0 win in game one today and battled to a 9-9 tie in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by senior catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland).
The Rams added three runs in the third. Junior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) belted a two-run homer and graduate student outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) added an RBI-single.
Doss and Keer each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher Chris Chaney (Falling Waters, W.Va./Saint James School/Maryland) (7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 7 K, 5 BB) (1-3) picked up the win. Kelly Holdren (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (1-1) took the loss.
Bloomsburg (12) and Shepherd (13) combined for 25 hits in the nightcap.
Sophomore catcher Peyton Mason (Knoxville, Md./Boonsboro/Wilson College) belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game.
Bloomsburg had the bases loaded with one out when the game was called due to darkness.
Graduate student second baseman Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) and Keer each had two hits to lead Shepherd.
Viggiano went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs for the Huskies. He had a pair of home runs.
The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to Mansfield for a 2 p.m. contest.
