CORNING, N.Y. – Mansfield (8-10, 2-4 PSAC East) handed Shepherd University (8-8-1, 3-2-1 PSAC East) an 11-5 setback in PSAC East baseball action at Corning Community College on Monday afternoon.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) reached on a two-out walk and scored on a double off the bat of junior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb).
Mansfield plated six runs in the third to take a 6-1 advantage. A two-run double by Marcus Nales keyed the rally.
Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs to make it 6-3. Senior catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) had an RBI-single and graduate student outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) drove in a run on a ground out.
The Rams cut the lead to 6-4 in the fifth as graduate student second baseman Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) singled, stole second base, and scored on a single by Doss.
Mansfield added a run in the eighth and then scored four more in the ninth to take an 11-4 advantage. Samuel Freedman, Shay Gustafson, and Kurt Biesecker each drove in a run in the ninth inning rally.
Shepherd completed the scoring in the bottom of the ninth as Schwartz singled and scored on a double by Mulhall.
Schwartz went 3-for-3 with three runs scored to lead the Rams. Doss and Mulhall each added a pair of hits.
Nales went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles to lead Mansfield. He scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.
Bobby Curry (3.2 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (1-1) gained the win for the Mounties. Junior pitcher Tanner Dixon (Frederick, Md./Frederick) (2.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 0 ER, 3 K, 4 BB) (1-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Shippensburg for a 2 p.m. game.
