Shepherd Baseball Edged by Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg (8-17, 3-4 PSAC East) handed Shepherd University (8-9-1, 3-3-1 PSAC East) a 4-3 setback in PSAC East baseball action at Shippensburg on Friday afternoon.  

Shippensburg took a 2-0 lead in the second inning behind a two-run homer by Ben Werkheiser.

The Raiders added two runs in the third on a two-run single by Andrew Chronister to take a 4-0 lead.

Shepherd rallied for three runs in the ninth. Graduate student outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic), senior outfielder Tommy Gibson (Sicklerville, N.J./Williamstown/Penn State/Rowan College of South Jersey Gloucester), and freshman shortstop Gino Serechia (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) each singled. Gibson was replaced by senior pinch-runner Brennan Holmes (Ona, W.Va./Cabell Midland). Keer scored when junior outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) reached on a fielder's choice. Junior third baseman Ryan Haddaway (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) followed with a single to score Serechia and Holmes.  

Chronister went 3-for-4 to lead Shippensburg. 

Shepherd left nine runners on base in the contest. 

Nick Zegna (7.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 0 R, 7 K, 5 BB) (3-3) earned the win for Shippensburg. Jackson LoBianco (0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB) picked up the save as he got graduate student second baseman Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) to fly out to end the game. Redshirt-senior pitcher Nick Trabacchi (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West/UMBC) (6.0 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (2-3) took the loss. 

The two teams return to action on Saturday for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
