SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (3-5) dropped a doubleheader to West Liberty (8-8) in softball action at Sara Cree Field on Tuesday. The Hilltoppers earned a 5-1 win in game one and added a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.
West Liberty scored all its runs in the third inning in game one. Madelyn Weidner and Kieran Johnson each had two-run singles to key the scoring.
Shepherd scored a run in the fourth as junior first baseman Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) led off with a single and later scored on a single off the bat of senior designated player Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando).
Davis went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.
Riley Bennington (4.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) gained the win in game one. Taylor Bonnett (3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K, 2 BB) earned the save. Junior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (2.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 0 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (1-1) took the loss for the Rams.
The Hilltoppers plated three runs in the fourth in the nightcap on two hits and two errors. Annie Patterson had an RBI-double and Johnson added an RBI-single to key the rally.
West Liberty added three more runs in the fifth as Katie Beeman had a two-run double and later scored on a single by Paterson.
Patterson (7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 9 K, 1 BB) earned the win for the Hilltoppers. Sophomore pitcher Kourtney McNatt (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink/WV Tech) (4.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (1-2) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to The Spring Games in Florida to face Grand Valley State at 12:15 p.m. and Saginaw Valley at 2:30 p.m. Doubleheader action slated for tomorrow at Bowie State has been postponed. No makeup plans have been announced.
