SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University gained a split with 24th-ranked Seton Hill in softball action at Shepherd on Sunday afternoon. Shepherd recorded an 8-6 win in game one, while Seton Hill took the nightcap with a 7-1 win.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in game one with a two-run double by junior catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) highlighting the rally.
After adding two runs in the second, Shepherd plated two more runs in the fifth on an RBI-double by Mantz and an RBI-single by sophomore outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) to take a 7-0 lead.
Seton Hill rallied with six runs on two hits and four Shepherd errors to make it 7-6 in the sixth. Grace Paredes had a two-run double to key the scoring.
Shepherd added a run in the sixth on an RBI-double by sophomore infielder Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy).
Sophomore outfielder Chloee Burton (Maurertown, Va./Central) went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams
Sophomore pitcher Kourtney McNatt (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink/WV Tech) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 2 ER 3 K, 4 BB) (2-3) earned the win for the Rams. Lauren Dellett (1.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (4-1) took the loss for the Griffins.
Morgan Toal went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and a pair of runs scored to lead Seton Hill in the nightcap win.
Junior designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) homered in the seventh for Shepherd.
Morgan Ryan (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (8-2) gained the win. Sophomore pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (4.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (2-6) took the loss.
The Rams are slated to return to action on Friday when they travel to Bloomsburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
