Shepherd Baseball Splits with Bluefield State

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – Shepherd (17-20-1) split with Bluefield State (22-25) in non-conference doubleheader baseball action at Bowen Field on Tuesday. The Rams posted a 21-5 win in game one, while Bluefield State recorded a 7-3 win in the nightcap. 

The Rams used a 20-hit attack in the game.one victory.

Junior third baseman Ryan Haddaway (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) went 3-for-4 with five runs scored and two RBI to lead the Rams. Senior outfielder Tommy Gibson (Sicklerville, N.J./Williamstown/Penn State/Rowan College of South Jersey Gloucester) had a 3-for-3 outing with three runs scored. Graduate student outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic), junior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb), senior catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland), senior designated hitter Connor DeWees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion), and sophomore outfielder Trey Sine (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) each added a pair of hits.

Senior outfielder Brennan Holmes (Ona, W.Va./Cabell Midland) hit the game's only home run when he belted a solo blast in the fifth inning. 

Redshirt-senior pitcher Nick Trabacchi (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West/UMBC) (2.0 IP, 1 H 0 R, 5 K, 1 BB) (3-5) picked up the win for the Rams. Stephen Hedgepeth (2.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R 4 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (1-2) took the loss. 

The Big Blue plated four runs in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie and pull away for the nightcap win. Roman Moore had a two-run single to key the rally. 

Ty Sizemore went 3-for-4 to lead Bluefield State. 

Mulhall had a pair of hits, while DeWees smacked a two-run homer to pace the Rams. 

Zach Powell (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (5-1) earned the win. Junior pitcher Tanner Dixon (Frederick, Md./Frederick) (0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (1-3) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to East Stroudsburg for a 2 p.m. contest.
