QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – Shepherd University (17-18) recorded an 11-3 win in five innings over Indiana (Pa.) (16-20) in PSAC Softball Tournament action at Veterans Park in Quakertown, Pa. on Wednesday afternoon.
IUP took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by Renee Wall.
Shepherd countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) walked and later scored when junior first baseman Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) reached on a fielder's choice. Davis moved to second on a single by junior catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) and later scored on a sacrifice fly by graduate student shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills). Mantz scored on a single off the bat of junior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington).
The Crimson Hawks added a run in the second on an RBI-single by Sara Tailford.
The Rams added three runs in the second behind a two-run homer from Purtell and a solo blast by Davis to take a 6-2 advantage.
Shepherd added a run in the third as Burger led off with a double and later scored on a ground out by sophomore outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville).
IUP added a run in the fourth as Allyssa Schmidt singled and scored on a double by Joelle Snyder.
Shepherd plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early on the eight-run rule. Senior first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando) led off with a double and scored on a double by Burger. Condon reached on a walk and Forte followed with a single to score Burger. Sophomore outfielder Chloee Burton (Maurertown, Va./Central) added a bunt single before Purtell laced a two-run double to score Forte and Condon to end the game.
Purtell went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams. Burger and Burton each added a pair of hits.
Snyder went 3-for-3 and Tailford added a 2-for-2 effort to lead the Crimson Hawks.
Junior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (5.0 IP, 12 H, 3 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (9-5) gained the win for the Rams. Amanda Fischer (0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (9-6) took the loss for IUP.
The Rams return to action tonight when they take on California (Pa.) (the top seed in the West) at 7 p.m. in PSAC Tournament action.
