Shepherd Football Tops California (Pa.) in Overtime Thriller

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Senior quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) completed 33-of-53 passes for 490 yards and three touchdowns to lead #4/5 Shepherd (3-0) to a 26-23 overtime win over California (Pa.) (1-2) in football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday. Redshirt-sophomore kicker Jacob Haynie (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) hit a 23-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Rams to the win. 

Shepherd took a 6-0 lead when Bagent and junior running back Ronnie Brown  (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) connected on a 73-yard for a score with 8:34 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point was blocked. 

Shepherd increased its lead to 13-0 when Bagent fired a seven-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver Marlon Cook (Forestville, Md./Potomac) with 12:02 left in the second quarter. 

Cal cut the lead to 13-7 when Noah Mitchell teamed with JaQuan Jackson on a 64-yard score with 6:39 left in the second quarter. 

Anthony Beiko connected on a 41-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to cut the lead to 13-10. 

Cal took the lead when Mitchell teamed with Jackson on a seven-yard touchdown to take a 16-13 lead with 9:25 left in the third quarter.

Beiko hit on a 36-yard field goal with 12:46 left in the fourth quarter to up the Cal lead to 20-13. 

Beiko added a 29-yard field goal with 10:02 left in the game to give the Vulcans a 23-13 advantage. 

Bagent tossed an 18-yard  scoring strike to freshman wide receiver Cameron Dorner (New Market, Md./Oakdale) with 8:20 left in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 23-20. 

Haynie connected on a 42-yard field goal as time expired in regulation to force overtime.

After Cal missed a field goal on its first possession in overtime, Haynie connected on the game-winner for the Rams. 

Mitchell completed 23-of-41 passes for 252 yards and two scores for the Vulcans. 

Cook led the Shepherd receivers with eight catches for 168 yards. Senior tight end Brian Walker (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) added six grabs for 99 yards. Jackson had 12 catches for170 yards and a pair of scores for the Vulcans. 

Shepherd had 504 yards of total offense, while California (Pa.) had 320. 

Redshirt-sophomore Devon Lynch (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) had a game-high 11 tackles (10 solos) to pace the Rams. Redshirt-sophomore defensive back Klayton Batten (Waldorf, Md./St. Charles) added six solo stops. Matt Tobey had six stops (five solos)  to lead Cal. 

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Kutztown for a noon contest. 

Notes: Shepherd improved to 5-3 in overtime games… the Rams snapped a two-game losing skid in overtime games … Shepherd's last OT win was a 30-24 victory over Fairmont State in 2001.
