Shepherd Men Top Kutztown, Namolik Gains 200th Win

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Shepherd (11-9, 8-6 PSAC) to an 82-73 win over Kutztown (5-14, 5-9 PSAC) in PSAC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday. Shepherd's win gave head coach Justin Namolik his 200th career victory. 

Preston connected on 8-of-18 field goals with a 6-of-14 effort from three-point range. He was 1-of-1 from the foul line. 

Junior guard Phillip Jordan (Rockville, Md./St. Albans) added 18 points and a game-high five assists. Junior guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) had 10 points, four boards, and four assists.Sophomore forward Ariel Goddot (Annandale, Va./Bishop Ireton) contributed four points and nine rebounds off the bench.

Jalen Bryant had 22 points to lead the Golden Bears. Kyree Generett had 16 points and Robert Tucker recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. 

Shepherd had a 34-27 lead at halftime.  

Clinging to a four-point lead at 47-43, Shepherd used a 9-2 run midway through the second half to build an 11-point lead after a jumper by Jordan gave the Rams a 56-45 lead with 11:06 remaining. 

Kutztown rallied to within seven points at 73-66 after a layup by Tucker with 2:02 left. Shepherd closed the game on a 9-7 run to seal the win.

Shepherd connected on 41.3 percent (26-63) of its field goals with a 31.4 percent (11-35) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 79.2 percent (19-24) of their free throws. 

Kutztown shot 39.7 percent (25-63) from the floor with a 21.1 percent (4-19) effort from beyond the arc. The Golden Bears hit on 82.6 percent (19-23) of their free throws. 

Shepherd had a 42-37 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced nine turnovers and committed nine. 

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Millersville for a 7:30 p.m. contest. 

Notes: Namolik joins Hall of Famer Bob Starkey (360) as the only Shepherd basketball coaches with 200 wins or more.
