Shepherd Football Downs Millersville, McCook Gets 50th Win

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. –  Junior quarterback Seth Morgan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon/VMI) completed 18-of-32 passes for 163 yards and a score, and redshirt-freshman running back Jordan Barnett (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge/Southern Utah) added 11 carries for 76 yards and a pair of scores to lead Shepherd (6-1, 3-1 PSAC East) to a 33-17 win over Millersville (3-4, 1-3 PSAC East) in PSAC East football action at Millersville on Saturday. The win gives head coach Ernie McCook his 50th career victory. 

Millersville took a 3-0 lead as Trent McDowell connected on a 28-yard field goal with 4:35 left in the first quarter. 

Shepherd answered back with a 32-yard field goal from sophomore kicker James Bozek (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) to tie the game at 3-3 as time expired in the first half. 

Jaquan Howard scored on a two-yard plunge with 7:02 left in the third quarter to give Millersville a 10-3 lead.

Shepherd answered back as Morgan teamed with junior wide receiver Jeremiah Taylor (Upper Marlboro, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School/Fairmont State) on a 40-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 10-10 with 6:15 left in the third quarter.

Sophomore defensive back Robby Hart (Laurel, Md./DeMatha Catholic) blocked a Zach Banta punt out of the end zone to give the Rams a 12-10 advantage with 4:19 left in the third quarter. 

Shepherd took a 17-3 lead into the break as Barnett scored on a three-yard plunge with 25 seconds left in the third quarter to take a 19-10 advantage.

The Marauders got a two-yard scoring run from Howard with 8:07 left in the game to cut the lead to 19-17. 

Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Nathan Muhle (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson)  sacked the Millersville quarterback and forced a fumble that redshirt sophomore defensive end Kevin Couser (Windsor Mill, Md./Baltimore City College) returned it two yards for a score to give the Rams a 26-17 lead with 6:16 remaining. 

Barnett added a 14-yard scoring run with 2:51 left to seal the win. 

Shepherd totaled 315 yards of total offense while Millersville had 330. 

Ryan Zeitt connected on 15-of-35 passes for 85 yards for the Marauders. 

Redshirt-junior running back Malakai Brown (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg)  had 20 carries for 103 yards for the Rams. Jaheim Morris had 24 carries for a game-high 229 yards for Millersville. 

Taylor had seven receptions for 99 yards to lead the Shepherd receivers. Hakim Melvin had two grabs for 25 yards to lead the Marauders.

Junior linebacker Harold O'Neal (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) led the Rams with nine tackles (five solos). Garrett Cox led the Marauders with 11 stops (5 solos). 

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host West Chester at noon for Homecoming.
