ETTRICK, Va. – Cabria Lewis scored 17 points to lead Virginia State (1-0) to a 91-58 win over Shepherd University (0-1) in women's basketball action at Virginia State on Saturday.
Junior guard Leila Copeland (Reston, Va./South Lakes/Barton) led the Rams with 17 points. She connected on 3-of-7 field goals with an 11-of-14 effort from the charity stripe. She also added five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Sophomore guard Jordan Carr (Charles Town, W.Va./Jefferson) added a career-high 13 points. She connected on 2-of-5 field goals with a 9-of-13 effort from the foul line.
Graduate student forward Cara Minor (Hundred, W.Va./North Marion) and freshman forward Carmaya Bowman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Mekayla Furman had 12 points, while Raija Todd and Tiyanna James each added 11 for Virginia State.
Virginia State had a 46-19 advantage at halftime.
Shepherd shot 30.2 percent (16-53) from the floor with a 15.4 percent (2-18) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 70.6 percent (24-34) of their free throws.
Virginia State shot 49.3 percent (34-69) from the floor with a 44 percent (11-25) effort from three-point range. The Trojans shot 50 percent (12-24) from the foul line.
Virginia State had a 46-36 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 15 turnovers and committed 20.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they face Lincoln (Pa.) at 3 p.m. at Virginia State.
