Shepherd Men Knock Off Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior forward Carson Poffenberger (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) scored 20 points and freshman guard Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) added 19 points to lead Shepherd (2-1) to a 76-68 win over Frostburg State (0-3) in men's basketball action at Frostburg on Wednesday. 

Poffenberger connected on 8-of-14 shots from the floor with a 2-of-4 effort from three-point range. He was 2-of-4 from the foul line. He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Banks hit 4-of-8 field goals and had an 11-of-15 effort from the foul line. Banks also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. 

Senior guard Phillip Jordan (Rockville, Md./St. Albans) added 15 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) had 14 points and five boards. 

JayShaun Freeman scored 17 points to pace the Bobcats. Logan Lewis added 16 points, four rebounds, and four steals.

Shepherd had a 26-25 lead at the half behind 11 first half points from Poffenberger. 

Shepherd took the lead for good at 64-63 on a layup by McClain-Corley with 3:10 left in the game. The Rams closed the game on a 12-5 run to cap the win. 

Shepherd connected on 47.2 percent (25-53) of its field goals with a 30 percent (3-10) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 67.6 percent (23-34) of their free throws. 

Frostburg State shot 36.8 percent (25-68) from the floor with a 35.5 percent (11-31) effort from beyond the arc. The Bobcats hit 87.5 percent (7-8) of their free throws. 

Rebounding was even at 33-all. The Rams forced 15 turnovers and committed 14. 

The Rams return to action next Tuesday when they host Virginia Union for a 3 p.m. game.
