SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Jakobe Williams scored 17 points to lead Virginia Union (3-4) to a 66-59 win over Shepherd (2-2) in men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Tuesday.
Junior forward Carson Poffenberger (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) had 17 points and six rebounds to lead the Rams. He connected on 6-of-9 field goals with a 2-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. He was 3-of-4 from the line.
Senior guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) added 14 points. Senior guard Phillip Jordan (Rockville, Md./St. Albans) added nine points, six rebounds, and four assists, while freshman guard Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) had nine points, four boards, and four assists.
Tahj Harding had 14 points and Jonathan Salazar tossed in 11 for the Panthers.
Virginia Union had a 35-25 lead at halftime.
Shepherd connected on 39.6 percent (19-48) of its field goals with a 24.1 percent (7-29) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 77.8 percent (14-18) of their free throws.
Virginia Union shot 41.2 percent (21-51) from the floor with a 16.7 percent (3-18) effort from beyond the arc. The Panthers hit 75 percent (21-28) of their free throws.
Virginia Union had a 35-29 edge on the boards. The Rams forced nine turnovers and committed 12.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Bowie State for a 4 p.m. game.
