SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore guard Peyton Grant (Plymouth, Maine/Dexter Regional) scored a game-high 26 points to lead Shepherd University (2-5) to a 79-54 win over Cheyney (3-5) in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Tuesday afternoon.
Grant connected on 10-of-15 field goals with a 6-of-10 effort from three-point range. She added a season-high five rebounds and a pair of assists. Grant's 26-point effort was just two points shy of her career-high 28-point output against Mansfield last season.
Junior guard Leila Copeland (Reston, Va./South Lakes/Barton) added 11 points and four boards, while junior guard/forward Sydney Bolles (Elkview, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) had 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, and a pair of blocked shots.
Freshman forward Carmaya Bowman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) and freshman guard Cassidy Rhodes (Point of Rocks, Md./Brunswick) each tossed in seven points. Bowman also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Ijahnay Johnson scored 12 points and added 11 to lead the Wolves.
Shepherd had a 42-29 lead at the half.
Shepherd shot 48.4 percent (30-62) from the floor with a 34.6 percent (9-26) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 71.4 percent (10-14 ) of their free throws.
Cheyney shot 34.5 percent (20-58) from the floor with a 30 percent (3-10) effort from three-point range. The Wolves shot 78.6 percent (11-14) from the foul line.
Shepherd had a 36-35 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 16 turnovers and committed 14.
The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to Slippery Rock for a 3 p.m. game.
